Planning materials before work starts

Good material planning connects specifications, quantities, availability and site readiness.

Choosing a material involves more than selecting its colour. Dimensions, finish, maintenance needs, suitability for its intended use and delivery timing all affect the result.

Review a physical sample

Where possible, view a sample in the setting in which it will be used. Light can change the appearance of a finish, and adjoining materials should be considered together. Keep an identifiable record of the approved sample and specification.

Connect selection with procurement

Quantities should be checked against the drawings and the agreed scope. Supplier availability, lead time, transport and storage conditions need to be considered before work is scheduled. A substitute should be reviewed for suitability before it is accepted.

Check what arrives

Delivery checks should cover quantity, visible condition and conformity with the order. Shortages or damaged items should be recorded promptly so the project team can agree the next action.
